Retrofitting Works
Pilot Retrofitting Programme for Chow Yei Ching Building and T.T. Tsui Building
A pilot retrofitting programme for Chow Yei Ching Building (CYC) and T.T. Tsui Building (TTT) on the Main Campus was largely completed in 2013, with relevant sustainability policies implemented in 2014. With the objective to reduce energy use of approximately 20% annually, improvements under the retrofitting programme include:
- Air conditioning plant upgrading and optimization
- Building management system upgrading
- Lighting retrofits and upgrading
- Window film installation
- Green roof construction and condensation water recycling
- CO2 sensor installation
- Air conditioning dehumidification system
Energy Saving Championship Scheme
In October 2016, Chow Yei Ching Building was nominated for the Energy Saving Championship Scheme organized by the Environment Bureau and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. The scheme aimed to recognise leading organisations in the adoption of energy efficient technologies and equipment, application of operational optimisation of energy consuming systems, development of best practices in energy management and promotion of energy saving among tenants and occupants.
After the aforesaid retrofitting works, over the past 3 years from 1 September 2013 to 31 August 2016, approximately 20% reduction in electricity use was achieved against the base year of 1 September 2012 to 31 August 2013.
Chow Yei Ching Building was awarded “Hanson Excellent Award” in the Award Presentation Ceremony on 18 May 2017.

Energy Saving Charter 2017
(a) maintain average indoor air temperature between 24 - 26 oC in summer;
(b) switch off appliances and systems when not in use;
(c) procure energy efficient appliances; and
(d) engage staff/ students to adopt the above energy saving practices together.
The "4Ts Charter"
(a) set energy saving Target with a Timeline; and
(b) ensure Transparency and work Together.
Green Building Installation for Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine Building
To enhance the energy efficiency of the Faculty of Medicine Building, a series of improvements had been carried out since its opening in 2001, including air-conditioning system modifications to cope with the long hours of building usage. In recent years, further enhancement works were carried out, such as:
- Solar water heating and heat pump installation
- Rain water collection for irrigation
- Green roof construction
